HGV drivers naturally spend a lot of time on the road. Therefore, both you and your employer have a responsibility to ensure that you remain fit enough to carry out the job.

To obtain your HGV driving licence, you’ll need to undergo a medical examination.

After that, repeat check-ups will be required when you turn 45, and every 5 years thereafter until the age of 65. From 65 onwards, you’ll be required to have your medical conducted annually.

Additionally, all existing lorry drivers are required to undergo medical examinations at these specified intervals to ensure their continued fitness for the role.

The HGV medical renewal process involves completing a new form with updated health information and reporting any changes in health condition to the DVLA for a medical examination.

You’ll undergo a comprehensive medical assessment, including a physical examination that covers a range of checks to ensure you meet the medical standards for HGV drivers.

This includes a vision assessment, where your eyesight will be tested using a Snellen chart to determine your visual acuity during the HGV medical exam. We’ll also check your blood pressure and discuss your medical history and any medications you may currently be taking, as these may impact your ability to drive safely.

Existing medical conditions such as neurological problems, heart conditions, diabetes, sleep disorders, and alcohol/drug usage will be assessed to determine their impact on your driving capabilities.

The Occupational Health Practitioner will fill out a medical examination report (DVLA form D4) to document your health details. Additionally, the importance of good mental health will be discussed, covering conditions like depression, anxiety, and dementia.
